Human Centric Robotics: from neuroscience to robot control during human-robot interactions
Whenever two humans physically interact with each other, like during dancing Tango, their movements are determined by complex mechanical and control interplays between the motion and forces generated by each individual. Understanding these interplays are essential for the development of future robots in rehabilitation, biomedical devices and tele-operation systems so as to ensure that the interacting human is comfortable with the interacting robot, feels safe with them and benefits physically and psychologically from them. However, this is not a trivial task because human interactions change not only with individual body dynamics and control but change also with cognition, age and disease. The reason we feel comfortable when interacting with another human is because the other human can understand our behavior in all these aspects and respond accordingly – my research aims to develop similar abilities in future robots. Through integrated research in robotics, bio-mechanics, motor psychophysics, control and social neuroscience, I aim for a comprehensive understanding of human-robot interactions and develop human like interaction abilities in robots. In this talk I will introduce my work and present an example of a human interaction experiment to exhibit how mechanics, engineering, robotics and neuroscience can be combined together to understand human behavioral dynamics and in turn be utilized to develop better design and behavior in robots.

題目: Untangling complex brain dynamics(複雑な脳のダイナミクスを”解きほぐす”)
The brain is a complex dynamical system. While a variety of innovative large-scale recording technologies are yielding a plethora of biological data at unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution, it may sometimes seem hopeless to derive a reduced, intuitive model from the nonlinear, heterogeneous and high-dimensional dynamics of a large neural population. However, extracting simple structures that govern complex neurophysiological phenomena is still possible by focusing on their deterministic aspects—constraints on the neural signals in the temporal domain. I will present two studies where theoretically-motivated analyses of intrinsic brain dynamics shed light on the underlying neural processing mechanisms.
First, using a nonlinear mapping from neural state to stimulus space, we find flexibly-modulated attractor dynamics during task-switching in monkey visual cortex. This is in contrast to a prevailing view that dynamics outside of sensory cortices solely account for the flexible sensory-action association. The temporal evolution of neural modulation is not explained by static gain-control mechanisms, suggesting an involvement of sensory cortex in recurrent dynamics that underlies the flexible perceptual abilities.
Next, I introduce a more generic method based on dynamical systems theory, which is capable of analyzing large-scale and heterogeneous neural interaction. Applying this method to whole-brain electrocardiography data from behaving monkey reveals a universal relationship between dynamical complexity and area-to-area interaction, which dissociates conscious from unconscious brain states. Remarkably, the method captures state-dependent structures of cross-area interaction that can be missed by conventional correlation-based analysis. These results underscore the importance of intrinsic dynamics in understanding complex neuronal systems.

Sound Medicine: Some contemporary and prospective uses of acoustics in medicine
Since the inception of medical diagnosis over two thousand years ago, acoustics has played a central role. Even today, however, the full potential of active acoustics and ultrasound in particular remains largely impeded by the strong mismatch in material properties between air, bone, and soft tissues. Likewise, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) used as a therapeutic tool has, until recently, been inhibited by the same barriers. Work of our lab has concentrated on surmounting these mismatches with the goal of providing diagnostic and therapeutic methods through bone and, in the case of imaging, even though air interfaces. This talk will survey the techniques and technologies we are utilizing to achieve this penetration. This includes the design and development of high-power transducers, new propagation and inversion techniques, and the use of model-based aberration correction. The specific applications of transcranial brain therapy, brain imaging, and non-contact medical imaging will be highlighted. Finally, near-field and long-wavelength techniques that open the possibility for medical diagnostics over wider range of the acoustic spectrum will be discussed.(音波、特に超音波は医療診断・治療に現在幅広く利用されています。
