This education program aims at fostering innovative human resources who are responsible for meeting technological needs in the onsite medical welfare treatment to realize societies in which people can live comfortably both mentally and physically. It was designed to educate graduate students who will become experts in new fields of engineering and who will be engaged in technology development based on brain sciences, in collaboration with experts in UEC’s advanced research fields, which are highly recognized worldwide.

This program is conducted by CNBE with financial support under the MEXT special expenditure program called “New Human Resource Development Programs Supporting Superaged Societies with Brain-Science-Inspired Life Support Innovation (2012-2017)”. It is expected to become part of the education programs officially offered in the graduate course of UEC in 2017. The program is designed for students to learn basic technologies for the enhancement of quality of life (QOL) based on the understanding of the functions of organisms obtained from internal collaborations with basic optical science and applied biometrics and ergonomics.

The recent advances in brain sciences have elucidated that brain functions are more plastic than expected, and that the brain facilitates regeneration of its functions depending on external stimuli. The promotion of technology development for the improvement of the brain’s performance up to a maximum level is a recent trend in science and technology. It is not difficult to forecast that the developed technology will be further elaborated and achieve a wider applicability. Therefore, CNBE aims at fostering new types of researchers and engineers who understand the mechanisms of brain plasticity for technology development.

This education program provides students with hands-on lecture courses to learn basic techniques in the following three areas.
